Carbon Farming FAQ
-
Carbon farming involves land or farm activities that permanently store or avoid carbon emissions into the atmosphere. The carbon credits generated by these activities can be sold to governments or organisations.
-
Landowners can earn ACCUs (carbon credits) by participating in the following project methodologies: (the Clean Energy Regulator is continually updating this list is not exhaustive):
Animal Effluent Management
Renewable power systems
Soil carbon
Biodiversity
Reforestation
Plantation Forestry
Cattle Feed Additives
Biofuels and feedstocks
-
Decrease emissions of agricultural products;
Increase your farm's productivity through land management activities and maximise your farm's balance sheet by diversifying your income;
Optimise your current and future exposures (liabilities) to climate change and environmental regulations;
Being paid for your work to protect the environment.
Soil Carbon Farming
Soil carbon farming is farming and grazing in a way that stores and holds carbon in soils. These activities can also improve productivity in your farming and grazing operations. Landholdings identified and registered as soil carbon projects undertake identified land management activities to increase the carbon in their soils.
The costs associated with land management activities can also improve productivity in your farming operations through soil improvement.
-
At the commencement of the project, onsite baselining determines the carbon levels at the property.
A land management plan is developed specifically for your property, with consideration of your farming operations, to improve the carbon in the soil.
-
Soil farming activities may include:
Applying nutrients to the land in the form of a synthetic or non-synthetic fertiliser
Re-establishing or rejuvenating a pasture by seeding or pasture cropping
Re-establishing and permanently maintaining a pasture, such as on cropland or bare fallow
Altering the stocking rate, duration or intensity of grazing to promote soil vegetation cover and improve soil health
Using mechanical means to add or redistribute soil through the soil profile
Using legume species in cropping or pasture systems
Using cover crops to promote soil vegetation cover and improve soil health.

Vegetation
A project under the vegetation methods sequesters carbon as the trees (vegetation) grow. That is, trees absorb carbon in the atmosphere.
Vegetation methods may also give you access to revenue from harvesting the trees and may earn you biodiversity credits.
-
Where your property is suitable for vegetation projects, we will develop a management plan specific to your property to maximise carbon yield and biomass yield.
The management plan includes the identification of which approved species that are most suited for your property.
Our financing options will give you the capital required to establish the trees.
-
The vegetation method includes many approved activities, each focusing on increasing carbon storage within biomass (trees).

Your land, your business, your decisions.
After consultation, we will provide you with your project management activities/ management plans. These plans are designed specifically for your projects to maximise the number of carbon credits produced. At all times, the implementation and decision-making around these activities remain in your complete control.
Your carbon credits, your future.
Once we have estimated the expected number of carbon credits generated from your projects, we will work with you to optimise how the carbon credits are used.
Sell, part sell, hold – the decision is yours. Our Carbon Executives can help you develop the carbon credit strategies that are right for you.
Don't understand how to sell carbon credits produced from your carbon farming projects?
Don't worry. Our Carbon Executives have extensive experience in carbon trading markets to help manage the market and contract risk associated with the on-sale of your carbon credits.
